From 15th-21st August, 1917, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 95 Brigade, 5th Division were in the front line at Oppy Wood, near Arras. George Bowen was killed here on 17th August when there was a direct hit of one of the battalion’s posts on the wood which caused four casualties. |
